I am building a business, part of it online, and there are no shortage of businesses that are happy to tell me how to do it. Many have great ideas, concepts, skills, etc. to share – that’s cool! Some promise me all kinds of things including accountability. That is they will help hold their clients or customers accountable for getting their work, a task, or goal accomplished.
I don’t do that, and it is a huge turn-off.
I think these businesses, coaches, and solopreneurs miss the mark. If we are not accountable to ourselves, then what is the point? That doesn’t mean we can’t encourage each other, offer support, help build skills, etc. But accountability is what we bring to the table. If you need me to help you be accountable, then how in the world will you create that new story or continue your play practice on your own? How will you lead with a creative voice? A creative voice comes from inside you. It does not come from the outside in.
I do not want to work with someone who thinks they need someone else to hold them accountable for what they need or want to do. I want to work with people who are accountable for themselves. Nothing less is workable or doable.
And, I don’t want to do business with people who think they need to help me be accountable for myself.
Yes, I believe we are accountable for ourselves and our actions – anything less might take away from the joy. I don’t want to take away from the joy.
