When we tell stories, we are listening too. One day I was once again telling one of my favorite well-honed tales and was sharing just how much I loved and wanted a cup of my favorite coffee, when I stopped in my tracks because I’d heard myself loud and clear. In fact, I didn’t love coffee anymore at all and I didn’t want it. Every time I said that I was reinforcing my old habit, not the new story I wanted to be sharing. It was a pivotal moment. Listening to my words made it easier to give up the habit.

You might be surprised to know I still tell that story and still recall as I tell it just how much I loved and wanted a cup of coffee. I’m aware now of what I’m saying and the truth behind the words. I did love coffee, I don’t love it anymore. Further, I love that little story because I learned more about how we listen to the stories we share; that the words we use matter; and that stories can be used to help us embrace and effect change.

What kind of stories are you telling yourself? Are you listening?

Enjoy the stories and have a playful day!
